Women's Lacrosse Rolls Past Newberry For First League Win
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Freshman Caroline Beggs (St. Johns, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) scored five goals to help pace Catawba to a 19-7 win over visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the SAC, while the Wolves fall to 0-4 and 0-2.
Beggs had four of her goals in the opening half as Catawba built a 13-3 advantage. Megan Shortt (Kernersville, N.C./E. Forsyth HS) also totaled five points for the Lady Indians with three goals and one assist, while Hannah Scott (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's Co. HS) picked up three goals and one assist.
With the game tied at 1-1, Beggs netted her first goal at the 22:35 mark of the half and Catawba stayed on top the rest of the way. Ajahna Grosvenor closed a Newberry deficit to 4-2 , but the Lady Indians tallied the next nine goals to pull away.
Catawba held a 36-24 edge in shots, including a 26-14 advantage in the first half.
Kristyn Kruse (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Williston Northampton Prep) and Alyssa Corace (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS) each had a goal and an assist for the Lady Indians, who got goals from 10 different players in the win. Bethany Davis (Salisbury, MD/Parkside HS) had a strong game in goal with 10 saves in 45 minutes. Madison Anselmo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue HS) stopped four shots over the final 15 minutes.
Grosvenor collected three goals for Newberry. Jessica Baxtrom and Savannah Ohlinger had a pair of goals. Morgan Raffaele made a dozen saves.
Catawba travels to Limestone on Wednesday for a 7 pm match-up with the nationally-ranked Saints.
