Swan Resigns To Take Post With Charlotte 49ers Women's Soccer
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba College Director of Athletics, Larry Leckonby, has announced that Head Women’s Soccer Coach Michael Swan is leaving the program to become assistant coach for the NCAA Division I Charlotte 49ers. Swan has led the Catawba Indians for the past five season and compiled a 47-40-7 record. A search for a new head coach will start immediately.
“Coach Swan has done an outstanding job for Catawba,” stated Leckonby. “He is leaving the women’s soccer program in a great position to challenge for a conference championship. Coach Swan has guided the team to success both on the field and in the classroom as the team achieved a 3.5 GPA last semester.”
Swan’s teams had winning seasons over the last three years. His best year was in 2012 as Catawba went 13-7 and advanced to the conference tournament semifinal match, losing to 11th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne. Swan also guided the team to the tournament semifinals this past season before again being eliminated by nationally-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne.
“The past five years have been some of the most enjoyable of my career thus far and it’s solely down to the players and the staff I have had the honor to work with,” said Swan. “I would just like to thank all of them for all they have done for me during my time at Catawba.”
“I would like to thank the Catawba family for five great years,” added Swan. “It has truly been my pleasure to lead the women’s soccer program at Catawba College. It is going be really tough leaving a group of exceptional ladies with a ton of talent and great personality. We have had a lot of great seasons over the past five years and it’s going to be really exciting to see what 2015 brings forth.”
In 2014, Catawba started the season with six straight wins and were ranked ninth in NSCAA poll before losing a pair of all-conference starters to injuries. The team regrouped by the end of the season to make its run to the conference semifinals.
“I’d like to express a special thank you to President Brien Lewis for his continued support of our renovations to the Frock Soccer Complex,” commented Swan. “More recently, I’d like to thank Larry Leckonby for his new visions for the athletic department. It has been a blessing to work with such great administrators.”
“Finally I would to thank Craig Turnbull and all the Catawba support staff for all the hours they have put in to help me put a great product on the field and in the classroom. I will truly always be a Catawba Indian.”
Swan joins a 49ers staff full of Catawba ties. Head Coach John Cullen led the Catawba women’s program for eight seasons before leaving for Charlotte. Cullen’s other assistant is Kim Crowley, a 2007 alum, who played and coached for Cullen at Catawba.
“I’m extremely excited to be given the opportunity to work for the Charlotte 49ers,” continued Swan. “To be able to work alongside Coach Cullen and Coach Crowley is a massive bonus. I know I will be able to gain a wealth of knowledge from both the coaching staff and the administration.”
Nick Brown, a current assistant with the program, will oversee conditioning and competition in the spring until a new coach is in place.
