Baseball Moves Lenoir-Rhyne Series Opener to Saturday

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba and Lenoir-Rhyne have shifted this weekend’s league series to games on Saturday and Sunday.  The opener between the teams will now begin with a doubleheader at 1 pm on Saturday.  Sunday will have a 1 pm first pitch.

Catawba (12-4, 5-3) is coming off an 11-0 win over Davis & Elkins on Monday.  The Indians are 12-4 on the season and have been led offensively by the hot bat of T.J. Wharton.  Wharton hit .500 for the month of February.  The senior homered and drove in three during the win over D&E.

Blake Houston, Dylan Richardson and Will Albertson are hitting well also.  Houston enters the weekend with a .404 average and has swiped six bases.  Richardson is hitting .358 with 20 RBI, while Albertson has connected on five homers with 22 RBI and a .356 average.

Catawba’s three weekend starters have combined for a 9-2 record.  Freshman Connor Johnson is undefeated in four starts with a 3-0 record and a 2.18 ERA.  He has allowed 15 hits over 20 and two-thirds innings on the mound with 21 strikeouts.

Craig Brooks and Shaefer Shepard both post 3-1 records.  Brooks has surrendered just 12 hits with eight walks over 32 and a third innings.  He has a 1.11 ERA and has fanned 42 batters.  Shepard boasts a 2.89 ERA over 28 innings, allowing 23 hits with 25 strikeouts.

Lenoir-Rhyne (12-6, 4-5) got off to a hot start this year, winning its first 10 games and gaining a national ranking.  The Bears pounded fourth-ranked Mount Olive 18-8 on Wednesday.  David Newcomer had three hits and a grand slam, while Matthew De La Rosa also collected three hits.

Bradley Rumford is hitting .411 to pace the Bears.  Newcomer has swatted three home runs.  Ryan Perkins is batting an even .400 with a team-high 19 RBI and four stolen bases.

On the mound, Thomas St. Clair is 4-1 with a 2.54 ERA.  He has allowed only 19 hits over 28 and a third innings with 49 strikeouts.  Closer Tad Rarliff has two saves and a win over 14 innings with 18 strikeouts.

The two teams are no strangers, meeting 227 times since 1926.  Catawba leads the overall series 122-105 and has a 75-46 edge in games played at Newman Park.  The Indians have won nine of the last 10 meetings.
