Brooks Leads Indians to a Pair of Wins over LR with 7 RBI

SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba College baseball team claimed a pair of wins over the visiting Lenoir-Rhyne Bears in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. Catawba improves to 13-4 on the season and 7-3 in the South Atlantic Conference.  With the loss Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 12-8 and 4-7 in the conference.

Craig Brooks shined in today’s games, playing an integral part in each.  Brooks began the first game on the mound and opened the day by striking out the side in the first.

Lenoir-Rhyne’s Thomas St. Clair responded from the mound in the bottom half with three quick outs of his own.  St. Clair pitched three perfect innings to start the game, including six strikeouts.

The teams were scoreless going into fourth when the Bears opened the inning with a solo homerun by Ivan Vieitez.  Lenoir-Rhyne added two more in the inning on a David Newcomer two run homer.

Catawba loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth but only managed one run on a wild pitch.  In the bottom of the fifth a Blake Houston single brought in two runs to tie the game back up at three apiece.

Matt Farmakis came in to mound to start the sixth. Brooks remained in the game as the designated hitter. In the bottom of the sixth Brooks hit a solo homer to lead off the inning which gave the Indians the lead they would need to claim a win.

The Indians wouldn’t settle though and continued to add four more run on in the sixth to take an 8-3 lead and knocking St. Clair out of the game.  Two of the runs in the sixth were a result of a Houston triple.

Catawba would seal the game with an unearned run in the eighth to lead 9-3.

Farmakis would shut down the Bears to close out the game and claim the win.  The win marks his first of the season to now stand a 1-1.  Farmakis finished the day with four innings pitched giving up two hits and striking out a pair. Brooks completed five innings while surrendering three runs and five hits despite striking out ten batters.

St. Clair took the loss for the Bears falling to 4-2 on the season.  In five innings on the mound St. Clair gave up seven hits, five earned runs, three walks and a home run.  St. Clair was able to strike out ten batters in the process. Landon Elks pitched 2.1 innings in relief and was credited for four of Catawba’s runs.  Matt Sullivan closed out the game recording the final two outs in the eighth.

In the second game Brooks stole the show to get Catawba started with his second home run of the day.  The bomb to center came with runner on second and third.

With the score 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth, a hard hit by Kyle Smith through the ride side opened the inning and started an onslaught of runs to follow. With the bases loaded Brooks tallied three more RBIs on the day with a bases clearing double down the right field line. The Indians reloaded the bases immediately after setting up another bases clearing hit.  This time freshman, Chance Bowden sprinted out a triple. Bowden would later score on a wild pitch.

Catawba would add four more runs in the sixth to take a 19-4 lead.

Shaefer Shepard pitched a complete game for the Indians to take the win.  With the win Shepard now stands at 4-1 on the season.  Shepard was credited with two of the four runs scored in the game while surrendering seven hits, two walks but striking out nine batters.

Lenoir-Rhyne used five pitchers in the second game. The starter, Wes McGuire was given the loss falling to 1-2 on the year.

Houston led all batters on the day going 5-for-8 with six RBIs and six runs scored. Brooks was clutch on the day batting 3-for-7 on the day with two homeruns, seven RBI and three runs scored.  The duo also combined for three walks in the second game.  Freshman, Chance Bowden contributed five hits on the day bringing in four RBIs.

Catawba will host Lenoir-Rhyne on Sunday to complete the three game series.  The single game will begin at 1:00 p.m.
