Bowles' Solid Relief Effort Locks Down Baseball's Sweep Of LR

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba completed a three-game sweep of Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference baseball action by claiming a 13-2 win over the Bears on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park.  The Catawba Indians have won 13 of its past 14 games and improved to 15-4 overall and 8-3 in the SAC.  The Bears fell to 12-9 and 4-8.

Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman HS/Campbell) paced the offense with four of Catawba's 17 hits.  T.J. Wharton (Lutz, Fla./Bishop McLaughlin/Guilford Tech) and Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman HS/Appalachian St.) each had three hits.

Avery Bowles (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson HS) picked up the win on the mound for the Indians.  He threw four shutout innings of relief, allowing just three hits with four strikeouts.  He got out of jam in the third with the game tied at 2-2.  After allowing a hit to the first man he faced to give the Bears runners at the corners, Bowles (2-0) got Will Thompson to ground into a double play to end the frame.

Catawba was able to snap that tie in the third.  Albertson singled and Wharton doubled to start the inning.  After a pair of strikeouts, Richardson singled home the go-ahead run.  Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury HS) followed with a RBI double to make it 4-2.

The Indians picked up four runs in the fifth to open up an 8-2 lead.  John Curtis nearly got the Bears out of the inning without a run scoring.  Catawba had the bases loaded with one, but Curtis got a come-backer to the mound which could have led to two outs.  His throw home was high and Catawba went on to have the big frame.

The Bears had erased an early 2-0 deficit.  Thompson led off the second with a home run and Marcus Shoemaker added a two-out run-scoring double to tie the game.  Josh Murphy had three of the 10 hits for the Bears.  Ivan Vieitez (2-3) took the loss for Lenoir-Rhyne, pitching into the fifth.

Seven different Indians drove in runs in the win.  Richardson and Bowden each collected two RBI.

Catawba will next host Shippensburg on Tuesday at 5 p.m.  That game has been moved up a day from its original Wednesday start.
