Houston Grabs NCBWA Player Of The Week Honors
PEMBROKE, N.C. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association has released its fourth weekly NCAA Division II Southeast Region Players of the Week for the week ending on March 8. The Hitter of the Week is Catawba senior Blake Houston, while the Pitcher of the Week is USC Aiken senior Forrest Koumas.
Blake Houston (Catawba/Mt. Ulla, N.C.) Batted .571 with eight hits and nine RBI to lead the Catawba Indians to a 4-0 record last week, including a series sweep over League foe Lenoir-Rhyne. He posted multiple hits in three of the four games he played in and highlighted his week with three hits, four RBI and a triple in the series opener against the Bears on March 7. The outfielder posted three extra-base hits in the four-game span to finish with a slugging percentage of .857. He also chipped in a stolen base on the week.
Forrest Koumas (USC Aiken/Lugoff, S.C.) Tossed a complete-game three-hit shutout against Georgia Southwestern, setting a new USCA school record with 18 strikeouts. The senior from Lugoff, S.C., was just one K away from tying the PBC record and becomes only the fourth pitcher to have 18 or more strikeouts in PBC history and the first to do so since 2003. He gave up all his hits and lone walk by the fourth inning and retired the next 10 batters in a row. He struck out the side in the sixth and eighth and five of the final six GSW batters were retired on strikeouts.Naemark (1-0) limited the Chaps to a .083 batting average in the game and now has a 1.06 ERA for the season through 17 innings. A junior left-handed pitcher, Naemark has recorded 23 strikeouts and has only walked two batters throughout the first three weeks of the season.
