Baseball gains split at Newberry

NEWBERRY, SC -- The number-three hitters for Catawba and Newberry each had four RBI in their respective team's win as the two South Atlantic Conference Tribes split a league doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Kirkland Field. Newberry took the opener 8-2, while Catawba won game two 9-7. Catawba improves to 20-16, with a 7-4 conference mark, while Newberry is now 16-18, with a 5-6 league record. In game one, Newberry's number-three batter, third baseman Stuart Kay (Greer, SC) had a grand slam in the sixth inning to press Newberry's lead in an 8-2 win. For Kay, it was his third homer of the week, his second with the bases loaded and it put his week's total at 13 RBI. The story for game one was the work of Newberry's Russell Haltiwanger (Simpsonville, SC) Haltiwanger tossed his first collegiate complete game, giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits and four walks. He struck out a career-high 11 batters in the win. He pushes his record to 5-1, including a 2-0 record in SAC play. Catawba's ace, junior Zach Snyder (Lexington, NC) enjoyed a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning, as he was in control of things early on. Only the leadoff hitter of the game, Newberry shortstop Billy Alm (Pine Plains, N.Y.) got a hit through the first five innings of Snyder's day. In the sixth, Snyder hit the leadoff batter and the second reached on an error. After a flyout, Snyder walked the next three batters, resulting in two runs for Newberry. Alm hit a single off Snyder's right shin to drive in another run, keeping the bases loaded. Following a strikeout, Kay hit a grand slam, capping off the seven-run sixth. In game two, Catawba jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first and never looked back, but had to stave off several Newberry runs. Number three hitter and center fielder Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) had a pair of home runs, including a three-run blast on top of the O.L. Casey Student Activities Center beyond left center field in the first and a leadoff solo homer in the third down the left field line. He walked and scored in the fourth and hit a double to right center field in the sixth to add to the damage. Newberry put up a pair of runs in the second after Smith hit a leadoff single to left and scored on a two-run homer to left center by center fielder Carlos Gonzalez (New York, N... That made the Catawba lead 4-2. The teams traded runs in the third, but the visiting Tribe put up three more in the fourth, all with two outs on three hits and a walk, including a two-RBI triple by designated hitter Chris Foy (South Mills, N.C.), giving Catawba an 8-3 margin. Smith scored his second of three runs on his first of two doubles in the fifth, cutting the lead to 8-4. Catawba snared an insurance run in the seventh on the team's third triple of the day, this one by left fielder Thomas Giles (Lynchburg, VA). Newberry scored three runs in the seventh and left the bases loaded with the tying run at second base to end the game. Catawba starter Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) weathered five innings of work, giving up six hits, two walks and a pair of plunkings in his win (5-2). Fairweather gave up four runs, but only three were earned and he struck out six. Newberry starter Joel Crisp (Summerville, SC) was not on his game, allowing six hits and four walks in three and two-thirds innings pitched. He gave up seven runs, all earned, while striking out two to fall to 0-3 on the season. #####
