Abernathy tosses shutout to give Baseball series win at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Catawba senior right-hander Chris Abernathy (Claremont, NC) tossed a complete-game shutout in Catawba's 14-0 pasting of Newberry at Kirkland Field Sunday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. The game gave a 2-1 SAC series win for the visiting Tribe, giving Catawba a 21-16 record overall and a solid 8-4 record in league play. Newberry dropped to 16-19 overall, with a 5-7 league mark. Catawba jumped on Newberry starter Billy Alm (Pine Plains, NY) early, scoring runs in each of his five innings in which he appeared. Nine batters reached base with two outs in the first three innings, including two walks, two hit batsmen, three singles, a double and a three-run homer by shortstop Blair Reynolds (King, NC), his seventh of the season, in the second inning. Alm lasted four innings, allowing eight hits, three walks and three hit batters to take the loss (5-2). Seven of the eight runs charged to him were earned, while he struck out six. Catawba was two batters shy of getting six times through the line-up, as all four Newberry pitchers allowed runs in the contest. Catawba finished with 16 hits all told, with 13 team RBI, while scoring in every inning but the sixth. Center fielder Spence Southard (Greensboro, N.C.) was 3-for-6 Sunday, knocking in a run with a double in the seventh inning. For the weekend, Southard batted 8-for-13 with three doubles, two home runs and five RBI. He slugged 1.308 for the series. Right fielder Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) was 4-for-6 on Sunday, scoring three runs. The freshman was 8-for-14 for the series against Newberry. Newberry managed just five hits against Abernathy, who allowed only one runner to touch second base all day. He got the win (4-2) going the distance on just five hits and one walk, while striking out nine batters. #####
