Meredith Jones Sets Assist Record in 18-4 Win Over LMU
SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba College women’s lacrosse team claimed a dominating 18-4 win over Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday morning at Shuford Stadium. With the win the Catawba Lady Indians improve to 4-3 on the season and 3-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. Lincoln Memorial falls to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in conference.
Catawba’s Meredith Jones had an outstanding day setting a new school record with five assists while recording three goals of her own. Jones’ new benchmark for assists was previously set at three. Caroline Beggs was the beneficiary of several of those assists with four goals while adding three assists. Bre’Asia James recorded all four goals for the Railsplitters, taking seven of the team’s 10 shots on the day.
The teams opened the game trading goals with Catawba drawing first blood. Nicolette Salay tallied the goal for Catawba with an assist from Beggs. The Railsplitters responded with a goal of their own by James to tie the game at one apiece. Salay would score again to give the Indians the lead that they would not relinquish.
Catawba finished the first half leading 15-1.
Bethany Davis started the first 11:52 in the net for the Indians facing two shots while allowing one goal. Davis transitioned to the field in the final minutes of the first half where she one-timed a goal to put Catawba up 14-1.
Madison Anselmo replaced Davis in goal for the remainder of the game. Anselmo faced eight shots on the day, saving one and allowing three.
Catawba had seven different goal scorers in the game. Salay, Alyssa Corace, Kourtney Jones and Kaleigh Reidy each scored two goals apiece.
Lincoln Memorial’s Shannon Novak was pelted the entire game facing 28 shots and saving seven.
Catawba will continue South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday as they host Wingate University at 3:30 p.m.
