Softball Steals Two From Bloomsburg With Late Rallies
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba took two extra inning affairs to sweep visiting Bloomsburg in a softball doubleheader on Sunday at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians rallied late in both, winning 7-6 and 6-5 to improve to 10-6. The Huskies fall to 5-5.
Down 6-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth in the opener, the Lady Indians scored five times to tie the game then won it in the eighth. Catawba was behind 5-0 in the seventh of the nightcap before getting off the deck to tie the game and again win in eight innings.
Catawba led the opener 1-0 after four innings, but Bloomsburg capitalized on an error to plate three runs in the fifth. Another error helped the Huskies add three more in the sixth to lead 6-1.
A pair of Bloomsburg errors aided Catawba's cause in the sixth. Taylor Adams (Smithfield, N.C./N. Johnston HS) drove in two runs to cut the deficit to 6-4 and later came around to score the tying run on a two-out infield single by Kristen Stinnard (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill HS).
Caroline Turner (Kenly, N.C./N. Johnston HS) had come on to get the final two outs of the sixth and pitched a prefect seventh to help send the game to extra innings. Carley Tysinger (Lexington, N.C./C. Davidson HS) reentered to start the eighth and recorded a strikeout before allowing a hit to put runners on the corners. Turner returned to the circle to strand the runners.
For Catawba in the eighth, Adams put down a bunt to move Delane Smith (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest HS) to third. Smith then raced home on the very next pitch that was low and went to the backstop.
Turner and Stinnard had two hits in the victory. Turner earned the win, pitching two and third innings of hitless relief. Tysinger struck out 10 in her five and two-thirds innings. Of the six runs she allowed, only two were earned.
The Huskies led 5-0 after four frames of game two. Taylor Parker, Caitlyn O'Connor and Erica Keen all homered for Bloomsburg in jumping out to the lead. It all fell apart for the visitors in the seventh, making three errors in the frame as Catawba rallied.
Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, N.C./Bartlett Yancy HS) got the inning started with a single. Three errors followed as Catawba closed the gap to 5-2. Holli Chandler (New London, N.C./N. Stanly HS) doubled to make it 5-3 and Adams drilled the first pitch she saw to left center to plate a pair of runs to tie the game.
In the eighth, Catawba was able to get an out at third on an initial sacrifice attempt then Turner notched a strikeout and fly out to end the frame. In the bottom half, Tysinger got to third on a fly out by Shumaker. After a walk, Adams popped up a single just behind the second base bag, but Tysinger was erased at the plate. With two outs, Smith's grounder was thrown away at first allowing the winning run to score.
Chandler went 3-for-3 in game two for Catawba. Turner (4-3) got her second win of the day as she went all eight innings and stuck out four. Kayla McHale had four hits for Bloomsburg.
Catawba will host Coker on Tuesday to open South Atlantic Conference play with a 1:30 pm doubleheader.
