Men's Lacrosse Loses To Wingate On Late Goal
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Wingate's Austin Murphy scored with nine seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs an 8-7 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday night at Shuford Stadium. The Bulldogs improve to 6-4 overall and 4-0 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 3-5 and 1-3.
Wingate got the final goal after a shot from Catawba's Zach LaFavre (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth HS) hit the post with 37 seconds left. The Bulldogs got the clear and called a timeout with 22 seconds remaining. Tanner Kotch was able to feed Murphy, who put home the winner. Catawba won the ensuing face-off, but could not get a shot off in the dying seconds.
Catawba had not trailed all night until the final seconds. Two goals from LaFavre in the first five minutes had the Indians up 2-0. Second-quarter goals from Dalton Cook (St. Augustine, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) and Jon Williams (Hillsborough, N.C./Northern HS) put Catawba up 4-1 at the half.
Wingate rallied in the third quarter to pull even. Kevin Norman, Kotch and Murphy put home three goals over a two minute span to the game at 4-all at the 6:31 mark. Adam Hebert (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic HS) returned the lead to the Indians a minute later and the score was 5-4 Catawba going to the final quarter.
Daniel Rew (Forest Hill, Md./Del Air HS) pushed the Catawba lead to 6-4 just 13 seconds in the fourth quarter, but Wingate tied the game with 11:30 to go on a pair of goals in 45 seconds. Chase Scott (Charlotte, N.C.) tallied at the 7:07 mark for Catawba with the Bulldogs getting even on a Norman goal with 2:02 left. The Indians held possession until hitting the post for the fourth time of the night to set up the final sequence.
Norman had four goals to lead Wingate. Murphy had two goals, while Kotch and Jeremy Sullivan each had a goal and an assist.
LaFavre scored twice for the Indians. Williams had a goal and two assists, while Hebert had a goal and one helper. Rew went 8-of-12 on face-offs and picked up five ground balls.
Catawba heads to Tusculum on Saturday for a 3 pm contest with the Pioneers.
