Baseball At Anderson For Weekend League Series Starting Friday
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba will take a season best nine game winning streak into this weekend’s South Atlantic Conference baseball series at Anderson. The Catawba Indians have swept the last two league series and have a one game lead in the SAC standings.
Catawba is 20-4 on the season and have won 18 of its past 19 games. It marks the fastest the Indians have reached 20 wins since starting 20-1 in 1992. Four times since then, including in both 2011 and 2012, Catawba has been 20-5.
Catawba’s offense has been scoring nearly 10 runs a game on the season and no player has been hotter than junior Will Albertson, who was named the NCBWA National Hitter of the Week. Over the past seven games, Albertson has collected 24 hits and sports a .484 average. He has had three or more hits in six of the past seven outings with three four-hit games and one five-hit outburst.
Freshman Chance Bowden has moved his average over .300 as of late. He had not homered over his first 21 games, but has back-to-back two homer games entering the weekend. T.J. Wharton is batting .443 and Blake Houston .417 with eight stolen bases.
Catawba’s pitching staff leads the SAC in most categories, entering Friday with a 2.82 ERA and an opponent’s batting average of just .225. Craig Brooks is allowing just over four hits per nine innings and has a 1.59 ERA. He is 4-1 with 64 strikeouts in 45 and a third innings. Shaefer Shepard leads the league in wins with a 5-1 mark and has a 2.79 ERA. He has fanned 43 in 42 innings.
The Indians have met Anderson 25 previous times on the diamond and the Indians hold a 20-5 edge in the series with an 8-5 edge in Anderson. Catawba has won 10 straight against the Trojans which dates back to 2011 when Anderson took two of three from the Indians in Anderson. That year, Catawba entered the series with a 20-5 record.
Anderson won two of three from Wingate last week and moved into a tie for third in the SAC. The Trojans have won seven of their past nine games.
LJ Newman paces the Trojans offense, hitting .447 with 12 doubles, a triple and four home runs. Steven Cooper sports a .333 average and has driven in 21 runs along with Brett Cash. Newman and Cooper are the only regulars hitting over .330, but the Trojans hit .312 as a team.
Five different Anderson pitchers have picked up two wins on the season. Cody Sheffield has made five starts and has compiled a 2-2 record with a 1.99 ERA. He has allowed 19 runs, but only five have been earned. Sheffield has given up 29 hits and walked 14 over 22 and two-third innings. David Thompson is 2-2 over six starts with a 4.68 ERA and Spencer Earle is 1-2 in his six starts.
