Baseball Walks Past Anderson In Series Opener

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Senior T.J. Wharton (Lutz, Fla./Bishop McLaughlin HS/Guilford Tech) hit a pair of three-run homers to help 24th-ranked Catawba roll past host Anderson 20-7 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium.  The win was the 10th straight for the Catawba Indians, who improve to 21-4 overall and 12-3 in the SAC.  The Trojans fall to 14-11 and 9-7.

Wharton banged out four hits on the night and drove in seven.  He had three-run homers in both of Catawba's five-run frames in the second and third innings.  Will Alberton (Sophia, N.C./Randleman HS/Campbell) drove in six runs on two hits, one a three-run homer, while Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury HS) had three hits and three RBI.

Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, N.C./S. Rowan HS) set a Catawba record by drawing five bases on balls and scored a record-tying six runs.  It equaled the mark by Craige Lyerly in 2008.

Craig Brooks (Monroe, N.C./Parkwood HS) put Catawba on top to stay when he drew a bases-loaded walk in the first.  It was one of a dozen in the game for the Indians.  Catawba went on to score three times in the first, but Anderson got two back in the bottom half.

Wharton hit the first of three-run homers to make it 6-2 in the second and after Bowden's RBI double it was 8-2.  Anderson threatened in the bottom of the second, loading the bases on a single, an error and a hit batter with no outs.  Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton HS) posted a strikeout and a double play ball to escape the inning unharmed.

Wharton cranked another three-run homer in the third and the rout was on.  Albertson hit a three-run homer in the fourth and tripled home two in the fifth to make it 17-2.  The Indians rapped out 17 hit in the win.  Brooks also had three hits.  Grayland Fowler (Moore, S.C./Dorman HS) scored four runs and  Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan HS) crossed the plate three times.

Shepard picked up the win to move to 6-1.  He pitched into the sixth and gave up just four earned runs off nine hits.  He fanned three.  Avery Bowles (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson HS) earned a save.  He tossed the final three and a third innings, allowing no runs off four hits with six strikeouts.

Catawba and Anderson will complete the weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 pm.
