Albertson Stays Hot As Baseball Moves Win Streak To 12


ANDERSON, S.C. -- Catawba, the 24th ranked team in NCAA II, ran its winning streak to a dozen games with a doubleheader sweep at Anderson Saturday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium.  The Catawba Indians, who have won 21 of its last 22 games, won by the scores of 9-1 and 13-4 to improve to 23-4 overall and 14-3 in the SAC.  The Trojans fall to 14-13 and 9-9.

Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman HS/Campbell) continued his red hot stretch, going 7-for-8 with three doubles and a home run.  He scored six runs and drove in three.  Since March 7, over his last 10 games, the junior is 33-of-43 (.767) and has walked five times while being hit three times.  Albertson has driven in 23 runs with eight doubles, a triple and six homers.

In the opener,  Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, N.C./S. Rowan HS) walked and came around to score on a wild pitch to give the Indians a quick 1-0 lead after an inning.  Houston went on to collected three hits in the win.

Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan HS) led off the fifth with a triple to jump start a four-run innings and push the lead to 5-0.  Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood HS/Presbyterian) and Albertson singled home runs, while Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman HS/Appalachian St.) doubled one in.  Fowler and Houston picked up RBI singles in the sixth and the Indians added two unearned runs in the seventh.

Albertson finished the opener with four hits.  Setzer, Fowler and T.J. Wharton (Lutz, Fla./Bishop McLaughlin HS/Guilford Tech) all had two hits to back six and two-thirds innings of shutout ball from Craig Brooks (Monroe, N.C./Parkwood HS).  Brooks (5-1) allowed just four hits, walked two and equaled a career high with a dozen strikeouts.

Houston led off game two with a home run, but the Indians only led 5-4 after three innings.  Richardson gave Catawba some breathing room with a three-run homer in the sixth that helped push the margin to 11-4.  Albertson capped the scoring with a two-run homer in the seventh.

Albertson doubled twice while scoring four runs and delivering three hits in game two.  Houston, Wharton, Setzer and Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley HS) followed with two-hit games.  Matt Farmakis (Sharpesburg, Ga./Northgate HS) moved to 2-1 with his win in relief.  He pitched three an a third scoreless innings and allowed just one hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Catawba will host Mount Olive, currently ranked 14th in NCAA, at Newman Park on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
