Rew Has Three Goals, 10 Ground Balls In Loss At Tusculum
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- Tusculum held on for a 7-6 win over Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday night at Pioneer Field. The Pioneers improve to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 3-6 and 1-4.
The game marked a second-straight league loss for the Indians that came down to the final seconds. Down 7-4, Catawba got goals from Jon Williams (Hillsborough, N.C./Northern HS), with 3:48 left, and Dalton Cook (St. Augustine, Fla./Bartram Trail HS), with 1:03 to go, to pull withing 7-6.
Daniel Rew (Forest Hill, Md./Del Air HS) won the ensuing face-off and the Indians had three chances to put in the tying goal. Adam Hebert (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic HS) had a shot blocked, Williams' shot with 21 seconds left was saves and a final attempt with five seconds remaining by Zach LaFavre (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth HS) was also blocked.
Tusculum never trailed in the game. Andrew Kransberger snapped a 1-1 tie with 5:09 to go in the opening quarter to give the Pioneers a 2-1 edge it would never relinquish. TC scored three goals in the final 5:09 of the initial quarter to lead 4-2. It was 6-3 at the half.
The Indians won 13-of-16 face-offs, outshot the Poineers 32-23 and grabbed 29 ground balls to 23 for TC, but could not come out on top. Rew scored three goals for the Indians, won 9-of-11 face-offs and picked up 10 ground balls. Willams, Cook and Liam Lynch (Marietta, Ga./Pope HS) scored the other three Catawba goals.
Kransberger tallied three goals for Tusculum. Nate Wade put in two goals. Kevin Haggerty collected eight saves.
Catawba travels to Queens on Wednesday for a 7 pm match-up with the Royals.
