Lacrosse earns first win over St. Andrews with 9-8 victory

LAURINBURG, NC -- Catawba College took advantage of a six-goal second quarter to defeat host St. Andrews 9-8 in Deep South Conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon. Catawba improves to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the DSC, while the Knights fall to 2-5 and 2-1. It marked the first win for Catawba over St. Andrews after 11 previous losses. St. Andrews scored twice before the Indians would get on the board in the first quarter. The Knights held a 3-1 advantage at the end of the first frame, but the Indians would take a 7-4 lead into halftime with Chris Khatri (Fairfax Station, VA) scoring three of Catawba's six goals in the second period. St. Andrews outscored Catawba 3-1 in the third quarter, but the Indians would hold on to an 8-7 lead at the end of the period. St. Andrews’ Ray Gayhardt fired in a shot to even the score at the 9:20 mark of the fourth quarter, but Catawba's Matt Riley (Baltimore, MD) would score what proved to be the game-winner on a pass from Jason Windett (Magnolia, DE) with 6:45 remaining. Zach Myrncza, Chris Stott, Brendon Burke, Pat Fitzgerald, Jimmy Herberson, Pat Haley, and Keith Belward joined Gayhardt in the scoring column with one goal apiece. Burke, Herberson, and Sean Jurecic had one assist each. Khatri and Pat Huskins (Hillsborough, NC) each recorded a hat trick for the Indians. The Knight defense held Josh Maphis (Ocean City, MD) to only one goal. Maphis came into the contest averaging 3.13 tallies per game, leading the conference with 25 goals. Andy Peterson (Glen Head, NY) and Riley also scored for Catawba while Peterson, Riley, and David Dunnuck (Greensboro, NC) had an assist. Kevin Woods made 12 saves for St. Andrews. Frank Fish had 15 saves for Catawba. #######
