Albertson Collects Five More Hits As Baseball Falls To Mount Olive
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Mount Olive benefited from seven Catawba errors to claim a 12-10 win in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Newman Park in a match-up of nationally-ranked teams. The Trojans, ranked 22nd, improved to 21-9, while the Catawba Indians, ranked 17th, fall to 23-5.
Mount Olive put 10 runs across in the first three innings as the Indians made four miscues. Only four of the runs were earned. Stephen Wallace doubled home two in a four-run first and Joe Koehler's two-run home run capped a four-run second. Kilgore Gailmard doubled home two in the third and it was 10-2.
Catawba whittled away at the deficit. Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman HS/Campbell), who went 5-for-5, hit solo home runs in the third and fifth to make it 11-4. Run-scoring singles from Albertson and T.J. Wharton (Lutz, Fla./Bishop McLaughlin HS/Guilford Tech) in the sixth pulled Catawba within 11-6.
In the seventh, Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan HS) singled home a run and Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, N.C./S. Rowan HS) added a sacrifice fly to close the gap to 11-8. The Trojans added a run in the eight before single runs from Catawba in the eighth and ninth decided the final outcome.
Albertson drove in three runs and scored four times in his perfect night at the plate. He is now 38-of-48 (.792) over his last 11 games with eight doubles, a triple and eight home runs. The junior has 26 RBI during the stretch and has scored 22 runs.
Houston had three hits, scoring three runs and had a solo homer in the ninth. Setzer also collected three hits, while Wharton had two hits and a pair of RBI.
Koehler and Justin Manning each knocked in three runs for the Trojans on a pair of hits. Wallace had three hits and two RBI, while Zak Orrison collected three hits and scored three runs.
Jordy Farthing (3-1) picked up the win for Mount Olive. He went five and two-thirds innings and allowed six runs on nine hits. Jose Serrano posted his second save as he worked the final two and two-thirds innings. The win marked the 1,000th for Mount Olive Head Coach Carl Lancaster.
