Baseball Looks To Start New Streak Against Winston-Salem State
SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba baseball team jumps back into action tonight at Winston-Salem, N.C., after a 12-10 loss to Mount Olive on Tuesday. It will mark the second straight nationally-ranked opponent for Catawba as Winston-Salem State comes into the game ranked 26th in NCAA II. Last night’s loss ended a season-best 12 game winning streak, but the Catawba Indians have still won 20 of its past 22 games.
Catawba and Winston-Salem State have met only six other times in baseball. The Indians won the first four meetings back in the early 70s when the teams met during the 1971, 1972 and 1973 years. After a 41 year hiatus the teams met again last season with the Rams winning twice.
Will Albertson continued a torrid hitting stretch with five more hits in the loss to Mount Olive, including a pair of homers. The junior has gone 38-for-48 (.792) over his last 11 games with eight doubles, a triple and eight home runs. He has already repeated SAC and NCBWA Southeast Region Player of the Week honors.
Albertson’s big numbers have overshadowed nice runs by several other hitters in the Indian lineup. T.J. Wharton, Blake Houston and Chance Bowden have each hit four home runs over the past 10 games. Bowden is batting .483 over that stretch with 17 RBI, Wharton is hitting .467 with 15 RBI and Houston is at .462 with 11 RBI and 19 runs scored.
Dylan Richardson has picked up five doubles with 11 RBI in the 10 game span while hitting at a .351 clip. Luke Setzer has also swung the bat well, hitting .370. As a team, the Indians are batting .377 in the last 10 games with 21 home runs.
Russ Weiker will likely get the ball to start tonight’s game. It will be his third start of the season. The sophomore is 2-1 with a 3.71 ERA and claimed a win last week against Barton. He worked six innings and allowed four runs on six hits.
Winston-Salem State saw Lenoir-Rhyne score five times in the ninth yesterday to steal a 14-11 win at BB&T Ballpark. Des Roberts collected three hits and drove in three in the loss. Conner Andrus homered and Dylan Dombrowskas had a pair of doubles.
Andrus is hitting .391 on the year for the Rams. Roberts bats at a .371 clip, while Dombrowskas is hitting .33 with three homers and 29 RBI. WSSU is hitting .318 as a team and has stolen 42 bases. Gavin Culler has recorded 18 of those steals.
The Ram pitching staff is allowing its opponents only a .204 batting average. In 29 games, WSSU has a 3.33 ERA, allowing 169 hits in 224 and a third innings.
Catawba returns to league action on Friday as the Indians begin a three-game series at Coker at 6 p.m.
