Men's Lacrosse Upended In Overtime By Queens
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Catawba suffered an 11-10 loss in overtime to host Queens in South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday night at Dickson Field. JT Thompson scored at the 2:34 mark of overtime to lift the Royals to 6-5 overall and 5-1 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 3-7 and 1-5.
A goal by Adam Hebert (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic HS) early in the fourth quarter had given Catawba an 8-5 lead, but Queens rallied. Evan Farkas scored twice in less than a minute and Casey Hock put in a tying goal with 11:33 remaining.
The Indians twice went back on top in the final 10 minutes. Hebert scored again at the 9:30 mark and Reid Lichtenberger gave Catawba a 10-9 lead with 4:18 to go. Queens was able to answer each goal. Justin Kestler had one at the 6:41 mark and Farkas netted the goal that sent the game to overtime with 1:47 remaining. Ryan Applegate (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) saved a shot from Jimmy Chickerella with only two seconds left.
Queens won the overtime face-off and after shooting wide with 2:54 to go, got the winner from Thompson. Hock and Farkas each had four goals for the Royals. Farkas added two assists. Kestler had a goal and an assist.
Catawba got three goals and an assist from Zach LaFavre (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth HS). Hebert had two goals and two assists. Dalton Cook (St. Augustine, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) picked up a pair of goals, while Ty Sellers (St. Johns, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) and Jon Williams (Hillsborough, N.C./Northern HS) both had a goal and an assist. Applegate made 13 saves off 42 Queens shots.
Williams put the Indians up with a goal just three minutes into the game. LaFavre scored a man down late in the first half to put Catawba up 4-1. The Royals tied it early in the third quarter before three straight tallies by the Indians made the score 7-4 at the 3:48 mark of the third.
Catawba will host Coker in a conference game on Saturday at 7 p.m.
