Baseball Tops Winston-Salem State In 10 Innings
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Catawba scored six times in the 10th inning to grab a 7-1 win over host Winston-Salem State in baseball action on Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark. The Catawba Indians, ranked 17th in NCAA II, improve to 24-5. The Rams, ranked 26th, fall to 22-8.
In a 1-1 tie after nine innings, Catawba exploded in the 10th. Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, N.C./S. Rowan HS) walked, while Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley HS) and Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman HS/Campbell) followed with singles to load the bases with no outs. After a force out at home, Craig Brooks (Monroe, N.C./Parkwood HS) laced a two-run single to give Catawba a 3-1 lead.
The Indians added another run when Grayland Fowler (Moore, S.C./Dorman HS) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury HS) singled home two runs and Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan HS) got the final run home on a ground out.
Brooks (6-1) got the win in relief. He threw four scoreless innings and fanned 10 of the 12 men he faced. The senior gave up one hit.
Brooks had two hits on the night along with Smith, Austin Stilley (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford HS) and Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman HS/Appalachian St.).
Catawba scored first, getting a run in the initial inning. Houston led off with a walk and went to third on a singly by Smith. Houston came home on a ground out by T.J. Wharton (Lutz, Fla./Bishop McLaughlin HS/Guilford Tech).
The Indians failed to build on their lead. Catawba left the bases loaded in the fifth and two more on in the sixth. The Rams were able to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth when Richardson dropped a pop up off the bat of Dylan Dombrowskas with two outs.
Sean Grant (Statesville, N.C./W. Iredell HS) started for the Indians and pitched into the sixth. He left before reliever Bryan Blanton (Albemarle, N.C./Albemarle HS) faced Dombrowskas. Grant allowed just an unearned run off three hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Blanton got the final out of the sixth then handed the ball to Brooks.
Catawba is scheduled to return to league action on Friday at 3 pm, opening a three-game series at Coker.
