Baseball Shifts Coker Series To Saturday-Sunday
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba returns to South Atlantic Conference baseball action this weekend as it travels to Hartsville, S.C., to face the Coker Cobras. The teams have adjusted the weekend schedule and will open the series on Saturday with a noon doubleheader. The final game is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
The teams have only met 11 previous times with Catawba leading the series 8-3. Coker has picked up three wins in four games played in Hartsville, but the last came in 1999. The teams first met in 1993 and did not play after 1999 until the Cobras joined the SAC for the 2014 season. Catawba swept last year’s three-game series in Salisbury, N.C.
Catawba is coming off a 7-1 win over 26th-ranked Winston-Salem State on Wednesday in 10 innings. The Indians had a 12-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday by 22nd-ranked Mount Olive, but have won 21 of their last 23 contests.
Craig Brooks claimed the win against WSSU, pitching four scoreless frames of relief and allowing just one hit. He fanned 10 of the 12 men he faced. Brooks also got the winning hit, snapping a 1-1 tie on a two-run single with one out in the 10th.
Will Albertson kept a 12-game hitting streak alive as he went 1-for-5. Chance Bowden also has a 12-game streak and drove in two with a pinch-hit single in the six-run 10th at WSSU. Blake Houston walked three times, but did have a 16-game hitting streak snapped.
Coker overwhelmed Voorhees on Wednesday, taking a win by the score of 39-0. That came a day after the Cobras fell 20-5 to UNC Pembroke. Tyler Osik had four hits and drove in seven during the win. Will Winslow picked up six RBI.
On the year, the Cobras have posted a 10-17 record and are 6-9 in March. Coker has one game in each of its last three league series which have come against Anderson, Lenoir-Rhyne and Carson-Newman.
Sammy Song leads Coker in hitting with a .385 average. He has seven doubles among his 37 hits and has driven in 17. Bryson Conner has hit two of the team’s seven home runs with eight doubles and a team-high 18 RBI.
The Cobra hurlers have had a rough time much of the year. Forrest Arnold leads the staff of those that have pitched more than 10 innings with a 6.17 ERA. He does have one shutout on the year. As a staff, Coker has a 7.98 ERA and opponents have hit for a .353 average. Dallas Baldwin sports a 3-3 record.
After this weekend, Catawba will return for a hefty amount of home games at Newman Park. The Indians play seven straight at home starting with Pfeiffer on March 31.
