A Second Half Surge Lifts Catawba to 12-9 Win Over Coker
SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba College women’s lacrosse team produced a strong second half to defeat Coker College 12-9 in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. With the win the Catawba Lady Indians improve to 6-5 overall and 5-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. Coker falls to 6-6 and 2-3, respectively.
After the first half, Coker held to a 6-5 lead over Catawba. The Lady Indians responded with an equalizing goal with 21 minutes remaining. The goal sparked a six goal streak for Catawba giving them an 11-6 lead. Coker would score four of the final five goals but the damage had already been done.
Megan Shortt led Catawba with four goals on the day, followed by Caroline Beggs who tallied three of her own.
Catawba’s defense played a large factor in the win with freshman Hannah Scott causing four turnovers to lead the Indians back line. Bethany Davis recorded the win for the Lady Indians in goal saving 14 shots.
Coker was led by Mackenzie Baker who scored four goals. Baker was aided by three goals from Claudia Jenkins. Kaitlyn Vela took the loss in goal for Coker, allowing 12 goals and saving six.
Catawba remains at home to host Chowan on Monday at 3:00 p.m.
