Softball Splits Doubleheader At Mars Hill

MARS HILL, N.C. -- Catawba and host Mars Hill split a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Ponder Field.  The Catawba Indians shutout Mars Hill 5-0 in the opener, while the Lions took a 3-2 win in eight innings to get the split.  The Lady Indians stand at 15-13 overall and 4-6 in the SAC, while Mars Hill is 6-15 and 2-6.

Carley Tysinger (Lexington, N.C./C. Davidson HS) threw her fourth straight shutout and struck out 11 in the opener.  She scattered five hits and walked two in improving to 11-6.  It marked the ninth time this season she has fanned 10+ in a game.

A two-out single by Caroline Turner (Kenly, N.C./N. Johnston HS) in the second put Catawba on top.  Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, N.C./Bartlett Yancy HS) doubled the lead in the fifth with a two-run homer.  Natalie Naturile (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson HS) added the final run on her solo shot in the seventh.

Turner and Naturile both had two hits in the opening win.  Tysinger has allowed 16 hits over 27 innings in her last four starts with six walks and 41 strikeouts.

Mars Hill grabbed an early lead in game two with a pair of runs in the first inning, but Catawba battled back.  Tysinger got the Lady Indians out of a bases loaded jam in the third and went on to keep the Lions off the board over the next four frames.

Catawba cut the deficit in half in the sixth on a RBI double by Taylor Adams (Smithfield, N.C./N. Johnston HS).  Naturile produced a run-scoring double in the seventh to plate Kristen Stinnard (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill HS), but Turner was thrown out at the plate.

Catawba failed to score in its eighth inning and Mars Hill got its tiebreak runner to third on a passed ball with no outs.  Tysinger got a strikeout then a pop up on a bunt for two outs, but Aleshia Peek was able to get a bunt down and reach first to plate the winning run for the Lions.

Tysinger (11-7) went five innings in relief without allowing an earned run.  She gave up four hits and struck out eight.  Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, N.Y./Madison HS) collected two hits.

Catawba travels to Queens on Wednesday for a 1:30 pm doubleheader.
