Daywalt's single caps ninth inning rally to top PfeifferKANNAPOLIS, NC – Freshman Andrew Daywalt’s (Mocksville, NC) RBI single capped a three-run ninth inning rally as Catawba defeated Pfeiffer 7-6 in baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The win improves Catawba to 22-17 overall, while the Falcons fall to 21-12. The Indians trailed 6-2 entering the bottom of the eighth, but got a two-out, two-run single by Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) to trim the deficit to 6-4. In the ninth, after a strikeout to open the frame, Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) and Blair Reynolds (King, NC) drew walks. Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) followed with a RBI single and Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) drove home the tying run with a double. After an intentional walk, Daywalt singled to right center to collect the game-winning hit. Pfeiffer had jumped out to a quick lead on the first of two towering home runs by Bryant Parnell (Concord, NC). It put the Falcons up 3-0 after a half inning. Baker drove home Reynolds in the Catawba first with a shot to the wall in dead center and the Tribe pulled within 3-2 in the third on a run-scoring single by Southard. The Falcons would add a run in the fifth on a single by Dusty Davis, then took its 6-2 edge on a two-run homer by Parnell in the sixth. Catawba would load the bases in the seventh, but could not score, then scored five times in the final two innings for the win. Baker and Southard each had three hits and a pair of RBI for Catawba, while Boyles and Reynolds each had two hits. Pfeiffer’s Jamie Tucker (Midland, NC) went 3-for-5, while Parnell had five RBI on his two hits. Mark Schleicher (Charlotte, NC) and Davis also collected two hits. Chris Abernathy (Claremont, NC) worked four solid inning of work for Catawba, allowing just two hits with two walks. Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) earned the win, pitching a hitless ninth with one strikeout. Jim Brown (Sparta, NC) took the loss for Pfeiffer. #####
