Baseball Starts Seven-Game Home Stand With WHITEOUT Game Tuesday

SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba baseball team will host a pair of midweek games before returning to league action this weekend.  The Catawba Indians, now 12th in NCAA II, play Pfeiffer on Tuesday and Winston-Salem State on Wednesday, both with a first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.

Tuesday's game against Pfeiffer will be a WHITEOUT game with the first 100 students receiving free t-shirts from the Residence Hall Association.  Students will also get free soda, crackerjacks and sunflower seeds.  Prizes will also be given away during the game.

Catawba is coming off a weekend sweep at Coker which marked its fourth straight conference sweep.  Catawba has won 25 of 27 games since starting the season 2-3.

Luke Setzer, Kyle Smith and T.J. Wharton all had big weekends at the plate against the Cobras.  Setzer went 7-of-11 (.636) with a pair of RBI and five runs scored.  Smith batted .538 and drove in the winning runs in both games during Saturday's doubleheader.  Wharton drove in three runs with a pair of doubles as he batted .500.

Shaefer Shepard and Craig Brooks both improved to 7-1 with wins in their starts this weekend.  Brooks struck out a career-high 14 batters and gave up just one hit in 16 innings.  He has a current streak of 18 and two-thirds scoreless innings.

Pfeiffer took two of three over the weekend against then seventh-ranked Erskine.  The Falcons are 21-14 and are coached by former Catawba assistant Dusty Blake.  He is assisted by former Indian standout shortstop Brett Underwood.

The Falcons appear at No. 10 in this weeks NCBWA Southeast Region Poll which is topped by Catawba, who received nine of 10 first-place votes.  Izzy Perez leads the Pfeiffer offense.  He is batting .372 with nine homers and 34 RBI.  Cody McKenzie is hitting .338 with 10 doubles and 19 RBI.

Pfeiffer and Catawba have faced off 138 previous times with the Indians holding a 71-67 edge all-time.  Catawba picked up an 8-4 win earlier this season against the Falcons.  Will Albertson's three-run homer and Wharton's two-run blast were the big blows for the Tribe.

On Wednesday, the Indians will battle Winston-Salem State for the second straight week.  Last week the Indians grabbed a 7-1 win in 10 innings.  The Rams have been idle since that game against Catawba.

The earlier win gave Catawba a 5-2 edge in the all-time series and snapped a two-game losing streak to the Rams.  WSSU won at Newman Park last season in a wild 14-10 contest that saw the Rams score 11 runs in the fifth inning to erase a 7-0 deficit.

Catawba will host Wingate in league action this weekend, beginning a three-game series on Friday night at 6 p.m.
