Errors Costly For Baseball In Loss To Pfeiffer
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Defensive miscues plagued 12th-ranked Catawba for the second straight home game in an 11-4 loss to Pfeiffer in baseball action on Tuesday night at Newman Park. The Falcons got a pair of three-run homers from Izzy Perez to improve to 22-14, while the Catawba Indians fall to 27-6.
Perez put the Falcons on top with a three-run home run in the first. Catawba would commit two errors in each of the next two innings as Pfeiffer added five more runs to lead 8-0 after three frames. Only one of those runs were earned.
Keith Little handcuffed Catawba for four innings on just one hit, a Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan HS) double in the third. With one out in the fifth, Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury HS) singled and Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley HS) walked. Setzer followed with his first collegiate homer to cut the deficit to 8-3.
Pfeiffer came right back as Perez hit his second three-run homer to get the eight-run lead back for the Falcons at 11-3. Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman HS/Campbell) hit his team-leading 14th home run for Catawba in the eighth to make the score 11-4.
Perez had three hits and six RBI to lead Pfeiffer. Anthony Allende also collected three hits, while Cole McGraw had two hits and a home run. Little did not get the win as he was lifted after four and two-thirds innings. Craig Jacobelli (2-0) notched the win two and a third scoreless innings of relief.
Setzer had two of Catawba's six hits. Pfeiffer held Catawba's big three (Blake Houston, Albertson and T.J. Wharton) to just one hit. Bowden extended his hitting streak to a season-high 16 games. Sean Grant (Statesville, N.C./W. Iredell HS) fell to 1-1 in taking the loss. Only three of the six runs he allowed were earned.
Catawba committed six errors on the night. The Indians had seven in its last home game, a 12-10 loss to Mount Olive. The Indians have made 26 errors over its past 10 games, half of their season total of 52.
Catawba is back in action at Newman Park on Wednesday as the Indians host Winston-Salem State at 6 pm.
