Albertson Ties Record With 8 RBI As Baseball Overwhelms WSSU
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Host Catawba connected on five home runs and Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman HS/Campbell) tied a school record with eight RBI as the 12th-ranked Indians topped Winston-Salem State 19-1 on Wednesday night at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 28-6, while the Rams fall to 22-9.
Albertson went 4-for-5 on the night with two home runs and a double. He had a three-run homer in a seven-run fourth and connected on a grand slam in a six-run fifth that all but decided the outcome. The eight RBI tied a school mark that was last accomplished by T.J. Wharton (Lutz, Fla./Bishop McLaughlin HS/Guilford Tech) last year at Pfeiffer.
Craig Brooks (Monroe, N.C./Parkwood HS) put Catawba on top to stay as he led off the second with a home run. Albertson picked up his first RBI of the night with a single in the third.
The Indians stretched the margin with the big fourth inning. Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury HS) started the scoring with a two-run homer which extended his hitting streak to 17 games, a team high for the season. A pair of errors kept the inning alive for Albertson who connected on his three-run homer to make it 8-0.
Albertson launched another long home run to left in the fifth which cleared the bases for his first grand slam as an Indian. Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman HS/Appalachian St.) had a two-run single to cap the inning for a 15-1 lead. Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley HS) capped the scoring with a two-run homer in the ninth.
Matt Farmakis (Sharpesburg, Ga./Northgate HS) went five innings to improve to 3-1. He allowed a run on four hits with one punch out. Four relievers finished off the game with Ryan McClintock (Matthews, N.C./Providence) tossing the ninth and setting a new school record with his 98th career appearance on the mound.
Brooks and Richardson each had three hits to follow Albertson's four. Richardson had three RBI and Brooks two. Wharton, Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, N.C./S. Rowan HS) and Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood HS/Presbyterian) each had two hits. Houston scored three runs along with Smith and Albertson.
Alex Grubb had three of the six hits for the Rams. He accounted for the lone run with a homer to start the fifth. Gavin Culler had two hits.
Catawba swings back into league action on Friday as the Indians host Wingate in a three-game series that is set to start Friday at 6 pm. Saturday's doubleheader has a 3 pm first pitch.
