Albertson Homers Twice In Loss To Wingate
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Wingate snapped 12th-ranked Catawba's 12-game conference winning streak, posting a 14-9 win on Friday night at Newman Park. The Bulldogs end a four-game losing skid and improve to 22-13 overall and 13-12 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 28-7 and 17-4.
Josh Clark had three hits, including a key three-run homer in the third, while Thomas Spitz also had three hits to pace a 15-hit Bulldog attack. All nine players in the Wingate lineup had at least one hit.
Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman HS/Campbell) had three hits, two home runs and five RBI for the Indians. Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, N.C./S. Rowan HS) had two hits, walked twice and scored three times.
Wingate took a lead it would never give up with a pair of unearned runs in the first. The only hit of the inning came on Shane Billings' lead off single. A pair of walks had the bases loaded with two outs when Colby Barnett grounded to short. A wide throw pulled Catawba first baseman Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury HS) up the line and Barnett was able to knock both the ball and glove off the hand of Bowden and two runs scored.
Clark's home run capped a four-run third to put Wingate up 6-1. The Bulldogs led 11-2 after scoring five in the sixth that included a two-run homer from Michael Godinez.
The Indians made the Bulldogs sweat it out answering those five runs with four in the bottom half of the frame to close within 11-6. Albertson hit the first of his two home runs, a three-run shot in the inning. Craig Brooks (Monroe, N.C./Parkwood HS) led off the seventh with a solo shot to close the gap to 11-7.
Albertson homered again in the eighth, this time a two-run round tripper and it was 11-9. Bowden nearly put Catawba on top later in the frame, but his high fly to left was caught by Bill Krebbs with his back against the wall.
The Bulldogs tacked on three runs in the top of the ninth for some breathing room and Tyler Brown set the Indians down in order for the final three outs to earn a three-inning save. He allowed two runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Brandon Donahue (1-2) earned the win as he came on for starter Jimmy Doolittle in the fourth. Billings and Blake Prince each had two hits for the Bulldogs to join Spitz and Clark with multi-hit games.
Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton HS/Francis Marion) suffered just his second loss in falling to 7-2. The Indians used 10 pitchers in the contest. Brooks and Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood HS/Presbyterian) both had two hits for the Catawba.
Catawba and Wingate will finish up the series with a 3 pm doubleheader on Saturday.
