Baseball Finishes Up Home Stand With Two Midweek Games
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba will hope to dodge the rain this week to get in a pair of midweek baseball games. The Catawba Indians, ranked 12th in NCAA II according to the latest Collegiate Baseball Poll, is set to host Barton on Tuesday and 30th-ranked UNC Pembroke on Wednesday. Both are scheduled for 6 pm starts.
Catawba took two of three over the weekend in its league series with Wingate. The Indians swept the Saturday doubleheader, winning the rubber game 7-6 in eight innings. Kyle Smith scored the winning run on a wild pitch. The Indians rallied with single runs in the sixth and seventh without a hit to erase a 6-4 deficit.
Will Albertson had another solid week and garnered South Atlantic Conference and NCBWA Southeast Region Player of the Week honors once again. Albertson kept his average right at .500. He also leads the team and conference with 19 homers and 67 RBIs.
Barton brings a 14-22 record into Tuesday’s game. The Indians earned a 16-5 win over the Bulldogs earlier this year in Wilson. Tyler Garrett and Nick McKinney are each batting .330 to pace Barton. McKinney has hit four home runs. Spiers Miller leads the team with five home runs and has 26 RBI.
UNC Pembroke marks a key regional contest for the Indians. Both are in contention for a high spot in the regional rankings when they begin near the end of the month. The Braves are currently 26-9 overall.
Collins Cuthrell leads the UNCP offense with a .453 batting average. The senior is right behind Albertson with 18 home runs and has picked up 54 RBI. The Braves have scored 351 runs in 35 games on the year.
Wes Halsabeck has led the starting staff with a 5-1 record and a 3.82 ERA. He has fanned 53 in 37 and two-thirds innings. Alex Britt has three saves and a 4-1 record in 16 appearances out of the pen. He has tossed 36 innings and has a 0.75 ERA.
The Indians will return to league action at Mars Hill this weekend with a three-game series starting Friday afternoon.
