Softball increases win streak to six in a row with sweep of Belmont AbbeyBELMONT, NC -- Catawba College swept a doubleheader from host Belmont Abbey in softball action on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Indians won by the scores of 4-3 and 13-10. Catawba increased its win streak to six games and improved to 19-13. The Crusaders fell to 11-15-1. Catawba fell behind 1-0 after an inning in the opener, but tied the game in the second, scoring off an error, then took the lead on a home run by Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD) in the fourth. It marked the first dinger of the season for Catawba. Val McDowell (Crofton, MD) singled home a run in the fifth as Catawba built its lead to 4-1. The Crusaders rallied in the seventh, scoring twice. One run came on an error, while Haylie Claussen tripled home a run with two-outs. After a walk, Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) struck out Cameron Greene to end the game. Handy scattered six hits in the complete game win. She allowed three runs, one earned with two walks and three strikeouts. Phelps and McDowell each had two hits. Game two was a wild affair as Catawba built an early 5-1 lead, but rallied back from an 8-7 deficit with a six-run fifth to regain control. Phelps had a two-run single and Megan Rosser (Glen Birnie, MD) a two-run double to spark Catawba to a 4-0 lead after a half inning. Belmont Abbey struck back in the third, scoring five times to take a 6-5 lead. Stefanie Spinks had a two-run triple in the frame. Catawba scored twice in the fourth to grab a 7-6 edge, but the Crusaders answered with a pair of runs in their fourth for the 8-7 advantage. In the fifth, Catawba used four hits and three errors in scoring its six runs to take a 13-8 lead. Belmont Abbey would get within 13-10, but Handy would record five strikeouts in three and a third innings of relief to earn her second win of the day and improve to 9-2. Amanda Myers (Lynchburg, VA) and Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) each had three hits for Catawba in the game two win. #####
