Indians Suffer Setback With 9-2 Loss to UNCP

SALISBURY, N.C. -- The #30 UNC Pembroke Braves claimed a 9-2 victory over #12 Catawba College Indians in non-conference baseball action Wednesday evening at Newman Park.  With the loss Catawba falls to 31-8 on the year while the Braves improve to 27-9.

Errors once again plagued the Indians on the day with one in each of the first two innings.  The blunders led to four unearned runs for Pembroke in the pair of innings.  Catawba recovered over the next four innings allowing just one hit during the span.

Sean Grant entered the game in the top of the seventh and allowed a solo homer to Pembroke’s Collins Cuthrell.  The homer tied Cuthrell with Catawba’s Will Albertson for leading all NCAA division II with 19 bombs.

Pembroke managed to add four more runs in the final two innings, sealing Catawba’s fate in the game.

Catawba’s Luke Setzer gave the Indians a small rally in the bottom of the third with a two run home run to left field.  The long ball was Setzer’s second on the season and brought the game to 4-2 at the time.  Catawba failed to cross the plate after that.

Catawba’s T.J. Wharton and Bryce Fowler each hit a double on the night to mark two of the tribe’s four hits.  Fowler scored after his double on the Setzer homer.

Pembroke’s Jordan DeLoatch recorded the win for the Braves in seven innings of work improving to 1-0 on the mound. DeLoatch gave up four hits and two runs but effectively squash the Indian’s offense tallying six strikeouts. Logan Cook shutdown the eighth inning and fly out to center followed by a pair of strikeouts.  The Brave’s closer, Alex Britt, ended Catawba’s night with two strikeouts and a fly ball to right.

Catawba starter, Matt Farmakis was notched with the loss as he fell to 3-2 on the season.  Farmakis lasted for an inning and two thirds while giving up four hits and four unearned runs.  Farmakis struck out two during his time on the mound.  Avery Bowles entered the game with two outs in the second inning and kept the Indians in the game through the sixth inning. Bowles finished the night striking out three and surrendering only three hits.

Catawba will return to South Atlantic Conference action on Friday as the Indians travel to Mars Hill for a weekend series.  Friday’s game will begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by a Saturday doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
