Baseball Weekend Series At Mars Hill Moved To Asheville
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Weather has once again altered Catawba’s weekend baseball series. The Indians and Mars Hill will play the series at UNC Asheville’s Greenwood Field and open with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 pm. The finale of the series will be on Sunday at 1 pm.
The 12th-ranked Indians will be looking to rebound from a 9-2 loss on Wednesday to 30th-ranked UNC Pembroke. Catawba managed just four hits in the loss and the lone runs came on a two-run homer by Luke Setzer. The first four UNCP runs that scored were unearned, putting the Indians in an early hole after two innings.
Will Albertson had one hit in the loss and saw his average dip to .497 on the season. He is the NCAA leader in home runs (19) and RBI (68) and ranks fifth in average. Albertson has been held hitless eight times this season, but only once in the last 22 games. Wednesday also marked the first time in eight games he did not drive in a run and first time in nine games he did not score.
One of the hottest hitters for the Indians over the last couple weeks has been Setzer. The freshman is batting .424 over the last 10 games with a pair of homers and 10 RBI. He has raised his average to .318 on the year.
T.J. Wharton is second to Albertson with a .431 average, 69 hits and seven home runs. Blake Houston tops the team in runs (58), doubles (15) and stolen bases (12). Chance Bowden is second to Albertson with 42 RBI.
Craig Brooks enters the weekend with an 8-1 record and a 1.32. His only loss was a 1-0 setback in the conference opener at Carson-Newman. Brooks leads the nation with 108 strikeouts over 68.1 innings. He has surrendered just 30 hits and opponents are batting just .128 off Brooks.
Shaefer Shepard has struggled in his past few starts, but has a 7-2 record with a 4.06 ERA. He has allowed 60 hits in 57.2 innings with 51 strikeouts. Connor Johnson has not had a decision since beating Shippensburg on March 10 and is 4-0 on the year. The Indians sport a 2.98 team ERA.
Mars Hill has played well as of late, winning 10 of its last 14 games. The four losses did come in league play where the Lions have won just one series this season as Mars Hill took two of three from Carson-Newman.
The Lions are hitting .293 as a team and are coming off a doubleheader sweep at North Greenville on Wednesday, taking both games by a single run. Dalton Eisenbath homered and drove in five runs, while Evan Rogers had four hits in the 10-inning win in the opener. Rogers tripled in two runs in game two that helped the Lions overcome an early 3-1 deficit.
Rayshelon Carolina is the top hitter by average in the Mars Hill lineup. He is batting .388 with 23 RBI and 17 stolen bases. Rogers follows at a .369 clip and has swiped 15 bases. Mars Hill has stolen 69 bases in 34 games with Johnathan Stamey leading the way with 19. The Lions have hit only 14 home runs with Eisenbath leading the squad with three homers and 28 RBI.
The Lion pitching staff ranks fourth in the SAC with a 4.59 ERA. Zac Brown leads the team with five wins and has posted the most starts, seven, along with Andy Runion. Runion is 0-3 with 3.42 ERA. Hunter Boydston has tossed one complete game and is 2-1 with a 4.33 ERA. Nick Villalobos is one of four pitchers to earn a save and leads the staff of those with at least 10 innings with a 2.08 ERA.
After the weekend series, Catawba will host USC Aiken on Wednesday night at 6 pm.
