Softball Drops Pair To Lincoln Memorial
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Lincoln Memorial collected a pair of wins with a doubleheader sweep of host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference softball action on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Railsplitters won by the scores of 4-1 and 1-0 to square their record at 18-18 overall and 7-7 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 21-15 and 10-8.
Samantha Smith held Catawba to just three hits in the opener then got LMU out of a sixth-inning jam of game two to post her first save. She improved to 7-8 with the game one win, allowing a single run with two walks and two strikeouts. She gave up one hit in two innings of relief in game two.
LMU went up 1-0 in the third inning of the opener. Kristen McAndrew singled and Savannah Couch was hit by a pitch. After an out, Emilee Soloman singled to load the bases. Kelly Dreier drove in the run with an infield single before Carley Tysinger (Lexington, N.C./C. Davidson HS) got the final two outs to strand three runners.
The Lady Railsplitters pushed across three unearned runs in the seventh to pad the lead. Dreier singled home one run and Meredith Johnson singled home two with two outs. The Lady Indians tried to rally in the seventh as the first three runners reached with Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, N.C./Madison HS) singling home a run. Smith retired the final three batters to get the win.
Taylor Adams (Smithfield, N.C./N. Johnston HS) and Holli Chandler (New London, N.C./N. Stanly HS) joined Gerone with hits for Catawba. Dreier had three hits for LMU. Tysinger allowed just one earned run in taking the loss. She walked four and fanned nine.
Lincoln Memorial scored the lone run of game two in the fifth. Jennifer Moose led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second. Couch followed a strikeout with a two-out double to left to break the scoreless tie.
The Lady Indians had a chance in the sixth as Natalie Naturile (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson HS) and Adams singled to start the inning. Adams just missed a home run with a drive off the fence in left.
Smith entered and Naturile was thrown out trying to steal third. Gerone followed with a double to put runners at second and third, but Smith got a soft liner back to her and a ground out to third to get out of trouble. Delane Smith (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest HS) reached on an error to start the seventh and got to third on a pair of ground outs before Smith got an infield pop up to end the game.
Brianna Taylor (10-9) got the win as she went five innings, allowing five hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Couch had two of the three LMU hits.
Naturile and Emily Huneycutt (Oakboro, N.C./W. Stanly HS) both had two hits for Catawba. Tysinger fell to 17-9 with her second loss of the day. She walked three and struck out eight.
Catawba will be on the road at Wingate on Tuesday for a 2 pm doubleheader.
