Pitching, long ball send Baseball to top of SAC standingsSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College swept a doubleheader from visiting Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. The Indians won by the scores of 10-4 and 7-3 and move atop the SAC standings by a half a game. Catawba improves to 24-17 overall and 10-4 in the SAC, while the Bears fall to 17-19 and 4-10, suffering their 12th straight loss. Lenoir-Rhyne jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the opener. Dustin Day (Lincolnton, NC) drove home a run in the first, while Lucas Jones (Lynchburg, VA) and Jason Bridges (Kings Mountain, NC) had RBI in the second inning. Catawba got a run back on a solo home run by Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) in the second, then scored sixth in the third to take control. Blair Reynolds (King, NC) singled home a run with two outs in the third, then an error opened the flood gates to five more Tribe runs. Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) had a two-run single, while Chris Foy (South Mills, NC) capped the frame with a two-run homer. That would be enough for Tribe starter Zach Snyder (Lexington, NC), who settled down after the opening innings and kept LR off the board until the eighth when Matt Wiley (Charlotte, NC) singled home a run with two outs. Catawba got a two-run homer from Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) in the sixth. Catawba used the most of its seven hits in the nightcap, scoring its runs on just four swings. Foy laced a two-run double down the right field line in the second and Baker cranked his team-leading 10th home run in the third, a two-run shot, for a 4-0 lead. In the fourth, Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) hit a two-run homer, while Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) capped the scoring with a solo shot in the sixth. Lenoir-Rhyne had cut the Tribe lead to 4-3 in the fourth on back-to-back homers by Craig Gesslein (Charlotte, NC) and Jeremy Crosby (Boone, NC). Matt Fairweather (Lenoir, NC) earned the win with a complete game effort for the Tribe. He allowed six hits with five strikeouts. #####
