Softball Assures Spot In SAC Tourney With Sweep Of Wingate
WINGATE, N.C. -- Catawba swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from host Wingate on Friday afternoon at the WU Softball Complex. The Lady Indians improved to 23-15 overall and 12-8 in the SAC with 6-3 and 2-1 victories. The Bulldogs fall to 24-18 and 11-9.
Carley Tysinger (Lexington, N.C./C. Davidson HS) threw a pair of complete games and got big hits from Holli Chandler (New London, N.C./N. Stanly HS) and Emily Huneycutt (Oakboro, N.C./W. Stanly HS) in the opener. The Lady Indians rallied late with single runs in the sixth and seventh to get the sweep.
Tysinger allowed just three hits and one unearned run in the nightcap. She walked two and fanned 10. Tysinger stranded two after an error in the second and left the bases loaded despite giving up a run in the third, avoiding further damage with a strikeout to end the frame.
That would be Wingate's last chance to score against the junior. Tysinger struck out the side in the fourth and went on to sit down the final 13 Bulldogs she faced.
Catawba had left a pair runners at second over the first four innings then left the bases loaded in the fifth. The Lady Indians would tie the game in the sixth when Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, N.Y./Madison HS) led off the inning with a home run.
Chandler walked to open the inning and Kristin Stinnard (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill HS) put down a sacrifice bunt. When Wingate tried to get Chandler on the bases a bad throw led to the go ahead run. That was all Tysinger needed as she posted two strikeouts and a fly out to end it and improve to 19-9.
Gerone had two of Catawba's seven hits in game two. Stacey Houser (17-13) took her second loss of the day. She allowed both runs, one earned, with four walks and one strikeout.
Catawba jumped out 6-0 in the opener. In the second, Chandler singled home two runs after a pair of Wingate errors. The Lady Indians added four more runs in the third. Taylor Adams (Smithfield, N.C./N. Johnston HS) doubled home one run and Huneycutt doubled home two more. A single by Delane Smith (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest HS) got the last run in for the 6-0 lead.
Wingate picked up a run in the fourth after Tysinger had tossed three hitless innings to start the game. The Bulldogs got singles to start the frame by Taylor Laskey and Alexis Burrell. Wingate got the run in on a two-out error. Burrell hit a two-run homer in the sixth, but Tysinger sat down the final six batters to claim the win.
Tysinger allowed four hits and two earned runs in the opener. She walked one and struck out nine. Stinnard had two hits for the Lady Indians. Burrell and Laskey had two hits apiece for Wingate. Houser allowed the six runs (four earned) over three innings of work.
Catawba hosts Brevard on Saturday for a 2 pm doubleheader to close out the regular season.
