Volleyball wins battle of IndiansSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College's Lady Indians defeated the visiting Newberry Indians in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. Catawba won in four games by the scores of 30-15, 30-25, 26-30 and 30-15. Catawba improves to 5-12 overall and 3-8 in the SAC, while Newberry falls to 7-17 and 2-9. Catawba used a seven-point run early in the opening game to take control at 13-4. Up by nine points at 21- 12, Catawba used another run, this time five straight points, to put the opening game away. The second game would be tightly contested from the outset. Neither team could lead by more than two points in the second game, until Catawba used a five point run to go from two down to a 25-22 lead. Sophomore Leah Fulford (Fuquay-Varina, NC) served Catawba into the lead, including an ace in the run. Catawba would hold the advantage, winning 30-25 on back-to-back kills by Hope Miller (Newton, NC) and Lettie Wilkes (Williamsport, MD). Game three went back and forth. Catawba jumped out to an 8-3 lead, but Newberry came back to tie the game at 10-10. Catawba would go up 13-10 only to see Newberry rally for a 16-13 edge. Catawba would eventually tie the game at 19-19, but Newberry reeled off four straight points for a 23-19 lead. Catawba twice got within a point, the last at 25-24, before Newberry spurted away for the win. Donna Coaxum (Summerville, SC) had two late aces and Amanda Adams (Pickens, SC) had the kill for the final point. Fulford served consecutive aces early the fourth game to stake Catawba to a 7-2 edge. Miller would record a pair of aces in a run to give Catawba a 15-8 edge. Catawba continued to pull away, recording the win with a 30-15 decision. Wilkes had a big match for Catawba, recording 48 assists, 10 digs, six kills, three blocks and two aces.
