Baseball completes sweep of Lenoir-Rhyne to stay atop SAC standingsSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College built a 16-3 lead, then held off visiting Lenoir-Rhyne to sweep the weekend South Atlantic Conference baseball series with a 16-10 win on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. The Indians improve to 25-17 overall and remaining atop the league standings with an 11-4 mark. Lenoir-Rhyne drops its 13th straight game, falling to 17-20 and 4-11. Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) gave the Tribe the lead for good with a two-run homer in the second. Catawba would break the game open in the third, scoring seven times with six unearned after a leadoff error. A Blair Reynolds (King, NC) grand slam highlighted the frame for Catawba. Reynolds would hit a solo shot in a three-run fifth and the Tribe added three insurance runs in the seventh. The Bears had scored twice in the sixth on an error and a RBI grounder by Lucas Jones (Lynchburg, VA). In the ninth, Lenoir-Rhyne scored seven times capped by a grand slam by Matt Wiley (Charlotte, NC). The Bears would get two more baserunners via walks, but Nick Mayle (Landis, NC) got a fly out to end the game. Chris Abernathy (Claremont, NC) pitched the first seven innings for Catawba to earn the win. He scattered nine hits and allowed three runs with only one being earned. Boyles had three hits and three RBI for Catawba, while Reynolds had five RBI on his two dingers. Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC), Chris Foy (South Mills, NC) and Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) also had three hits for the Tribe. Wiley collected four RBI for the Bears, while Dustin Day (Lincolnton, NC) had three hits. #####
