Men's Lacrosse Suffers Last-Second Loss to Adams State
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Adams State's Seth Stowell scored with just 6.6 seconds remaining to lift the visiting Grizzlies to an 11-10 win over Catawba in men's lacrosse action on Friday night at Shuford Stadium. Adams State improves to 3-10, while the Catawba Indians fall to 5-9.
Catawba trailed 9-7 early in the fourth quarter, but battled back to tie it with 7:23 left on a man-up goal by Adam Hebert (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic HS). The Indians went on top with 4:35 left as Zach LeFavre (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth HS) grabbed a loose ball on a failed clear and found Ty Sellers (St. Johns, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) for the go-ahead goal.
Adams State drew a Catawba penalty with just under four minutes to play and Tanner Jones capitalized just before the penalty expired to tie the game again with 2:53 remaining. The Indians had possession in the final two minutes, but Hebert missed a shot wide with 1:27 left and Adams State kept possession until Stowell's game-winning shot.
The game was back-and-forth all night. The teams each scored in the first quarter before Catawba scored twice in the opening minute of the second quarter. The Grizzlies reeled off three straight goals to lead 4-3 and the teams traded goals to end the half with Adams State holding a 5-4 edge.
The Grizzlies' Josh Peterman put Adams State up 6-4 early in the third quarter before Catawba got goals from LaFavre and Hebert to pull even. The teams spilt goals until Stowell scored back-to-back to give Adams State its 9-7 lead to set up the exciting final minutes.
LaFavre led Catawba with six goals. Sellers and Hebert each scored twice. Ryan Applegate (Ponte Vedra Bach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) made 11 saves.
Stowell had five of Adams State's goals. Peterman added three and Jones two. Alec Hamlin also had 11 saves in goal for the Grizzlies.
Catawba will travel to Limestone on May 2 to close out its season with a 7 pm contest against the second-ranked Saints.
