Lacrosse falls at Roanoke

SALEM, VA -- Roanoke College senior Andy Bonasera (Columbus, OH) and junior Kris Davis (Parkton, MD) combined for 23 points as the Maroons defeated visiting Catawba 24-13 in men’s lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon. Roanoke improves to 8-3, while the Indians fall to 5-5. The Maroons erupted for 11 first period goals and build an 11-3 edge after the opening quarter of play. Colin Burke (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) won the opening face-off and Ben Love (Berwyn Heights, MD) found Burke to give the Maroons a 1-0 lead just 16 seconds into the contest. Less than minute later Mike Chase (Webster, NY) scored one of his three first period goals to give RC the 2-0 lead. Catawba’s Pat Huskins (Hillsborough, NC) made the score 2-1 with a goal at 11:35, but the Maroons would score the next eight goals to make the score 10-1. The first three of those eight goals came in a span of just 32 seconds. By the end of the first period, Bonasera had scored four goals and added three assists, while Davis had scored three goals and added one assist. Roanoke scored seven more times in the second period and at the half owned an 18-7 lead. The Maroons outscored the Indians 4-1 in the third period and held a 22-8 lead heading into the fourth period. The Indians closed the gap a bit by outscoring the Maroons 5-2 in the final 15 minutes. Three of Catawba’s final four goals came on the extra-man. Bonasera scored eight goals and added five assists to lead Roanoke. Davis finished the day with 11 points on six goals and five assists, while Chase scored four times and added assists on three other Roanoke goals. Josh Maphis (Ocean City, MD) scored four times for the Indians, who also got goals from two different defensemen, including David Donohue (Davidsonville, MD). #####
