Baseball Drops Regular Season Finale at Mount Olive
MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -- Host Mount Olive topped Catawba 9-4 in baseball action on Monday night at Scarborough Field. The 28th-ranked Trojans improve to 35-14, while the Catawba Indians, ranked 12th, fall to 40-13.
The Trojans answered a Catawba three-run second with three of their own to lead 4-3 and Mount Olive would lead the rest of the way. A two-out error on the Indians led to the final two runs of the frame after Zac Orrison had singled home a run.
Mount Olive added another run in the third on a wild pitch and plated three in the fifth to break the game open. The Trojans scored on a pair of sacrifice flies and an error.
The Indians had chances to get back into the game, but Gunner Kines (8-2) worked out of several jams to grab the win. Catawba loaded the bases on an error and two walks in the fifth, but failed to score. Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan HS) doubled home a run in the seventh, but Kines limited the damage by stranding two runners.
In the second, Catawba took the early lead after falling behind on Kilgore Gailmard's home run in the first. Craig Brooks (Monroe, N.C./Parkwood HS) tripled and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. After a single by Dylan Richardson (Randleman, N.C./Randleman HS/Appalachian St.), Setzer was hit by a pitch. Following a sacrifice, Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, N.C./S. Rowan HS) was intentionally walked and Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood HS/Presbyterian) doubled home two runs.
Houston led Catawba with three hits. Richardson and Setzer both had two hits. Fowler plated two runs and Richardson scored twice. Connor Johnson (Rockwell, N.C./E. Rowan HS) took the loss and fell to 5-1 as he pitched only two and a third innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on four hits and a pair of walks.
Orrison, Gailmard and Jason Morozowski all had a pair of hits for the Trojans. Kines went seven innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits with eight strikeouts. Kodi Whitley and Dario Santangelo each worked a hitless inning in relief.
Catawba will find out about its regional bid on Sunday night around 10 p.m.
