2015 NCAA Southeast Regional: North Georgia Defeats Georgia College 10-3
THOMASVILLE, N.C. -- Travis Naraine homered and had three hits to help pace North Georgia to a 10-3 win over Georgia College on the opening day of the 2015 NCAA II Southeast Region Baseball Tournament on Thursday at Finch Field. The Nighthawks, ranked 17th in NCAA II and the tournament’s third seed, improve to 36-15. The Bobcats fall to 33-18.
Naraine opened the scoring as he led off the bottom of the second with a home run to right field. North Georgia went on to add two more runs in the frame. The final two runs scored on an error and a wild pitch.
Nighthawk starter Dylan Peppers danced around seven walks and a pair of hits over the first four innings, but kept Georgia College off the scoreboard until the sixth. North Georgia broke the game open in the fourth, plating all the runs with two outs. Bo Edwards had one of the key hits in the inning with a two-run double.
Georgia College would get on the board in the sixth. Brandon Purcell doubled home two runs and Jake Sandlin singled home another to make it 8-3. Josh Bryan relieved Peppers and kept the Bobcats off the board over his three and a third innings to grab his fourth save.
Peppers improved to 7-2 as he tossed five and two-thirds innings and allowed three runs off six hits. Peppers walked seven and struck out three. Bryan allowed four hits with a pair of walks and two strikeouts. Connor Hoover and Trevor Sams each had two hits to join Naraine with multi-hit efforts.
Logan Mattix was on four times for the Bobcats with a pair of hits and two walks. Dylan Cook and Steven Hazel also had two hits in the loss for Georgia College. The Bobcats had 10 hits and drew nine walks, but left 13 on base. Josh Clark (4-2) took the loss as gave up three runs (one earned) in just over an inning of work.
North Georgia advances to play the winner of this afternoon’s contest between second-seeded Mount Olive and fifth-seeded Wingate on Friday night at 7 p.m. Georgia College with face the winner of the game between top-seeded Catawba and sixth-seeded North Greenville on Friday at 3 pm.
