Baseball Drops Game to Pomona Setting Up Rematch on Friday
CARY, N.C. -- Cal Poly Pomona avoided elimination claiming an 11-2 victory over Catawba Thursday afternoon in the 2015 NCAA II Baseball National Finals at the USA National Training Complex’s Coleman Field. The eighth-ranked Broncos improve to 46-16, while the Catawba Indians, ranked second, fall to 46-14. The teams will face off again on Friday at 3 pm for the right to face Tampa on Saturday in the Championship game.
Max Bethell threw six innings of no-hit ball for the Broncos and Kyle Garlick collected four hits and scored three runs to lead the Pomona offense. Ryan Webberly had three hits, while Nick Cooksey, Mike Philp and Brennen Salgado each drove in two runs.
Pomona took advantage of a Catawba error to produce a five-run third inning en route to the win. After a walk and single started the inning, the Indians tried to get an out at third on a sacrifice attempt by Christian Kelley. The throw was wild and allowed two Bronco runs to score on the play.
The Broncos added three more runs before the top of the third was over. With two outs, Philp doubled home a run and Webberly tripled him in. A single from Salgado plated the final run of the frame.
Bethell (8-3) had plenty of support to work with after the third inning outburst. He did not allow a Catawba base runner until issuing a two-out walk to Will Albertson (Sophia, N.C./Randleman HS/Campbell) in the fourth. He also walked Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, N.C./S. Rowan HS) with two outs in the sixth.
Albertson broke up Bethell’s no-hit bid with a sinking fly ball to center to start the seventh. The junior would go seven and two-thirds innings, allowing just the one hit with two walks and six strikeouts.
Pomona added another five runs in the sixth in cruising to the win. That inning was much like the third with a leadoff walk to Jacob Bernardy and a single by Garlick. Another error on a sacrifice brought in a run with Cooksey and Matt Munoz adding RBI hits. The final two runs scored on sacrifice flies by Philp and Salgado.
Catawba broke up the shutout bid by Pomona in the eighth. Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood HS/Presbyterian) singled and Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler HS) connected on a two-run homer over the scoreboard in right.
Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton HS/Francis Marion) took the loss for Catawba and fell to 11-4. He gave up four runs on five hits over two and two-thirds innings. Freshman Clay Young (Greensboro, N.C./Caldwell Academy) had the best outing for Catawba on the mound as he threw four shutout innings, allowing three hits with one strikeout.
