Albertson and Brooks Among NCAA II Baseball Stat Leaders
Catawba’s baseball team finished the year ranked highly in numerous categories in the year-end NCAA II statistics. The Catawba Indians ranked among the top 20 in a dozen categories, while also producing several individual stat leaders.
The most touted stat leaders were Will Alberton and Craig Brooks. Albertson’s .467 average led the nation. He also collected the most hits (114) and had the most total bases (211), while finishing second in total RBI (91) and third in home runs (26). Albertson stood seventh in the nation in home runs per game (.42), on-base percentage (.531) and slugging percentage (.865). He was eighth in RBI per game (1.47) and his 75 runs scored was fifth in NCAA II.
Brooks posted the most strikeouts in the nation with 158 and also topped the list at 14.36 strikeouts per nine innings. He stood sixth in hits allowed per nine innings (4.91) and eighth in WHIP (0.89). Brooks recorded the 11th lowest ERA at 1.45.
Blake Houston drew a NCAA II-best 51 walks on the year and was 10th in walks per game (0.84). He finished second in runs scored (79) and 10th in runs per games (1.3).
Ryan McClintock not only led NCAA II with 35 appearances, he finished his career with a NCAA II record 118 relief appearances. He was ranked 31st with his eight saves. Shaefer Shepard’s 17 starts ranked second in the nation and his 11 wins stood seventh.
As a team, Catawba scored the second-most runs in the country with 501 and was 22nd in runs per game (8.1). The Indians also ranked top five in doubles (2nd-138), walks (4th-255) and hits (4th-663). The Indians pitching staff was 21st in ERA (3.43), 23rd in hits allowed per nine innings (8.57), 19th in strikeouts per nine innings (8.5) and 21st in WHIP (1.29).
