Volleyball Splits Two Matches at Queens Inv.
CHARLOTTE, N.C -- Catawba split a pair of volleyball matches to open the season at the Queens Invitational on Friday at the Levine Center. The Catawba Indians started with a five-set loss to King then came back late in the afternoon to sweep Mount Olive.
Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) posted 13 kills to help Catawba sweep Mount Olive 25-23, 25-11 and 25-16. The Lady Indians also got four blocks each from Audrey Hoffman (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek HS) and Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS), 28 assists from setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) and 14 digs from libero Meredith Furr (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill HS).
After pulling out the tight first set on a kill by Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS), Catawba pulled away in the second set to lead 18-8 after a 10-4 run. The Lady Indians rolled to a 10-3 lead early in set three and cruised to the win. Catawba hit at 31.5% for the match.
In the opener against King, Catawba fell behind 2-0 after losing the opener two sets by a 25-23 score. The Lady Indians rallied from a 20-15 deficit in set three to win 25-23 then forced a deciding set with a 25-16 win. King jumped to an 8-2 lead in the fifth and went on for the win.
McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS) posted 15 kills with 12 digs for Catawba. Hopper added 10 kills with Frabotta handing out 32 assists. The Lady Indians hit just 10.8%, including negative numbers in the first two sets.
Catawba will be back in action for two more matches on Saturday. The Lady Indians face GRU Augusta at 10:30 am and Lander at 5:15 pm.
