Lady Indians Battled Nova Southeastern in 3-2 Loss
SALISBURY, NC -- The Catawba College women’s soccer team suffered a 3-2 defeat on a late goal by Nova Southeastern to open the 2015 campaign Friday night at Frock Field. The match was the first of the year for both squads.
In the 83rd minute, the Nova Southeastern Sharks forced a Catawba foul just outside the penalty box. The ensuing free kick was tapped back by Samantha Gestido to Sierra Lelii who drilled in the game winner over the Catawba wall. The goal was Lelii’s second of the game after drawing first blood in the fifth minute.
Catawba’s Alex Hulsey was the first Lady Indian to score on the year after placing a Kiersten Peck corner past the Shark keeper, Jordan Lentz, in the ninth minute. Nova would score again before halftime to go into the break leading 2-1.
Kristina Hoff scored the equalizer in the 75th minute with a lob from the top of the penalty box over the head of Lentz.
Nova out shot Catawba by a margin of 22-6 landing 14 shots on goal to Catawba’s five. Catawba keeper, Angelica Pawlowski tallied 11 saves on the night. Lentz recorded three of her own.
The Catawba Lady Indians will return to action on Sunday as they host USC Aiken at Frock Field. Gametime is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
