Softball shutout twice by Mars Hill

SALISBURY, NC -- Mars Hill swept a doubleheader from host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference softball action at Whitley Field on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Lions won by the scores of 4-0 and 1-0 as they improve to 17-25 overall and 4-6 in the SAC. Catawba falls to 19-17 and 4-4. In the opener, Mars Hill pounded out 12 hits and took the 4-0 win. Lady Indian starter Megan Wilson (Stuart, VA) retired the first 10 batters she faced, but Mars Hill was able to string four straight hits together with one out in the fourth to grab the lead. A pop single by Alicia Flynn (Old Town, FL) that fell between the pitchers mound and second base started the streak and Audrey Riffel (Enterprise, KS) drove her home with a single. The Lady Lions would add three insurance runs in the sixth, putting together another streak of four hits in the frame. Riffel tripled home a run with one out, while Carissa Rice (Weaverville, NC) and Deanna Hinson (Montgomery, AL) had RBI singles. Catawba put runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, but could not push a run across. Val McDowell (Crofton, MD) had three hits for the Lady Indians, who left 10 runners on base. Lyn Loomis (Ocean Isle, NC) tossed the shutout for Mars Hill. Lindsay Hert (Simpsonville, SC) won a pitchers duel in game two, allowing just four hits with four strikeouts. The lone run of the game came in the fifth inning. Brandi Brunson (Americus, GA) doubled with one out, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Hinson. Catawba tried to answer in its half of the fifth as Amanda Myers (Lynchburg, VA) led off with a double, but she was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a one-out single by Janie Motsinger (Kernersville, NC). Catawba would leave four runners on base in the nightcap, all in scoring position. Hinson collected three hits for Mars Hill in the second game, while Riffel added two. Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) took the loss for Catawba, scattering seven hits with nine strikeouts. #####
