Football Heads to Davidson For Week Two Match Up
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba will travel its shortest distance of the year for a week two match up at Davidson College this weekend. The 36 mile trip is the first of five road games for the Catawba Indians this season and returns the Indians to Richardson Field where Catawba posted a 35-7 win a year ago.
The game will mark the 24th meeting between the schools in football with Davidson holding a 17-6 edge all-time. The Wildcats were the first-ever opponent on the gridiron for Catawba with the initial game taking place in 1907. Catawba has won the last four in the series.
Catawba’s offense was held in check last week in a 44-13 loss to fourth-ranked West Georgia. The Indians totaled just 145 yards of offense and suffered four turnovers. Cary Littlejohn accounted for 57 of those yards which came on the ground. He scored the lone touchdown for Catawba late in the second quarter that pulled the Indians at the time within 16-13.
The Indian defensive unit helped keep Catawba in the game early. The defense forced five fumbles on the day which not only led to six points, but also gave the Indians great field position for most of the first half.
Kyle Kitchens had three stops for losses, including a sack. He forced one of the fumbles and recovered two. Jamal Lackey caused two fumbles and recovered one on a sack. Last year, Lackey returned an interception for a touchdown against Davidson for the game’s first points.
Davidson was overwhelmed by The Citadel 69-0 last week. Like Catawba, the Wildcats were held to little offense by the Bulldogs. Davidson had just 104 total yards and threw four interceptions. The Citadel’s option offense ran for 535 yards. William Morris and Derek Jones each caught three passes for Davidson. Taylor Mitchell completed 8-of-12 passes for 52 yards.
