15 Blocks Help Volleyball Repel Wolves in SAC Opener
NEWBERRY, S.C -- Catawba posted 15 blocks, 11 by Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS ), in opening South Atlantic Conference volleyball play with a 3-1 win over host Newberry on Friday night at Eleazer Arena. The Catawba Indians level their record at 3-3 overall and move to 1-0 in the SAC. The Wolves fall to 4-2 and 0-1.
Setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) posted a triple-double for Catawba in the 25-14, 19-25, 25-22, 25-17 win. The senior had 10 kills, 38 assists and 17 digs. Frabotta also had three blocks and served an ace. Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) and McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS) each totaled 11 kills.
Catawba used a 9-2 run to take control midway through the first set. Hopper had two kills, Frabotta an ace and Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) provided two blocks and a kill in the surge that made it 23-13. Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) and Garrison killed off the final two points for the Lady Indians.
Newberry rallied back in set two. The Wolves took the early lead behind Mary Siebert. Siebert had five kills to help the hosts to a 15-7 lead. The Wolves kept a comfortable lead the rest of the set, hitting their best percentage of the match at 21%.
The Wolves started strong in the third set, leading 8-2 after three straight kills from Logan Hayward. The Lady Indians chipped away and would tie the set at 16-all on a kill from Gallup. Newberry built a 20-18 lead before four straight Catawba points turned the tide. Morant started it with a kill and Hopper ended it with another kill after a pair of Newberry errors. Up 23-22, Hopper killed off the final two points.
Catawba jumped on Newberry in the fourth set. Morant served three aces as the Lady Indians scored the first seven points. It was an 11-2 lead after a kill from Garrison. Howard had back-to-back blocks for a 20-9 edge and Frabotta notched her 10th kill to make it 23-15 to finish the triple-double. Morant killed off the match point.
Siebert led Newberry with a dozen kills. Hayward totaled 11 kills with 19 digs and a pair of blocks. Kensley Jordan collected 22 digs and served three aces. The Wolves hit just 8.6% for the match.
Evan Schultz (Richmond, Va./Monacan HS) registered 22 digs for Catawba. Meredith Furr (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill HS) posted 19 digs and Garrison joined Frabotta with 17 digs. Morant finished with four aces.
Catawba plays twice on Saturday at Anderson. The Lady Indians will face Anderson at noon then Flagler at 2:30 pm.
