Adams Wins Women's Race, Men Finish Second at Elon Invitational
ELON, NC -- The Catawba College cross country teams both finished second at the Elon University Invitational Saturday morning. Catawba Freshman Abbie Adams took the overall Division II women's win with a time of 19:54. Adams time ranks 12th all-time in Catawba's history for women's 5k races. Mount Olive took the overall Division II team lead out of five teams for both races.
In the women's race, Adams was spurred ahead by teammate Morgan Grubb who finished second with a time of 20:44. Erica Boles was the next Lady Indian to finish the race in a time of 21:46 for eighth place. Freshman Nikita Elminowski finished four seconds behind Boles for a ninth place finish. DeAnna Hedgepeth finished 13th for the Lady Indians with a time of 22:42. Jordan Hunt and Lexie Petty rounded out the Indians lineup in 14th and 15th with times of 23:41 and 25:58, respectively.
On the men's side, Catawba finished consecutively between eighth through 14th. Curtis Carmack was the first Catawba runner to finish a time of 27:28. Matthew Jordan-steele was the next runner to finish with a time of 27:48. In tenth and eleventh positions were Sean McMahon (27:57 ) and Drew Lake (28:04). AJ Meadows edged out Ian Buff with times of 28:41 and 28:45, respectively. Henry Brenner rounded out the Catawba runners to count for points with a time of 29:29.
Catawba also boasted other men's runners that did not count for placements. Nathan Hatley was the first to finish with a 16th place time of 29:52. Korby Chappell finished 17th with a time of 30:22 and Dustin Deal placed 19th with a time of 31:30. In 23rd position was Dylan DeSpain with a time of 33:59. Jonathon Boles finished out the Catawba runners with a 25th place time 34:40.
Catawba will return home on Friday for the Chick-fil-A Invitational hosted at Salisbury Community Park. The race is a make-up date after lightning forced the Sept. 4th event to be postponed. The women will begin the event at 5:30 p.m. with the men beginning at 6:15p p.m.
