Littlejohn's Career Day Leads Football Past Davidson
DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Senior running back Cary Littlejohn (Columbus, N.C./Polk Co. HS) ran for a career-high 192 yards to power visiting Catawba to a 35-21 win over Davidson on Saturday night at Richardson Stadium. The Catawba Indians even their record at 1-1, while the Wildcats fall to 0-2.
Littlejohn got the scoring started with a 64-yard scamper midway through the first quarter. Davidson would answer late in the frame on a 21-yard run by Jeffrey Keil. Catawba would take control after that, putting up 18 consecutive points before a Wildcat score late in the half made it 25-14 at the break.
Catawba sandwiched scoring runs of 32 yards from Eamon Smart (Cape Coral, Fla./Cape Coral HS), on fourth down and one, and Mike Sheehan (Wilmington, N.C./Laney HS), from a yard out, around a 30-yard field goal from Chad Hollandsworth (Kernersville, N.C./E. Forsyth HS) for its second quarter outburst. Davidson capitalized on a late interception as Keil ran in from three yards out with just over a minute before the break.
Hollandsworth added another field goal, from 25 yards away, midway through the third quarter then Sheehan iced the issue with a 49-yard strike to Bruce Smith (Winston-Salem, N.C./N. Davidson HS) in the final seconds of the third. Davidson got a final score on a 12-yard pass from John Cook to William Morris.
Littlejohn nearly set a personal best by the half with 130 yards in the opening two quarters. He carried the ball 27 times with an average of 7.1 yards per attempt. The 192 yards equaled Kory Fisher's total as the eighth best day for a Catawba back. Smart just missed a 100-yard day, finishing with 86 yards on 15 carries.
Sheehan went 12-of-24 through the air for 168 yards. He added 38 yards on the ground. Carlos Tarrats (Jacksonville, Fla./Raines HS) hauled in five passes for 62 yards.
Jamal Lackey (Mocksville, N.C./Davie Co. HS) recorded 10 tackles on defense for the Indians. Freshman Jeremy Addison (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork HS) had a sack and a fumble recovery, while Case Woodard (Snellville, Ga./Arabia Mountain HS/Georgia Military) picked off a pass.
Catawba out gained Davidson 490 yards to 362 and totaled 322 yards on the ground. Keil went over the 100-yard mark for the Wildcats, running for 121 yards on 19 attempts. Morris made six catches for 76 yards, while Cook completed 13-of-34 passes for 165 yards.
Catawba opens South Atlantic Conference play next weekend, traveling to Carson-Newman for a 1 pm kickoff.
